Position: Scientific Assistant
Department: Microbiology
Site: Sittingbourne
Hours of work: 9.00am to 9.00pm
Days of work: 4 days on 4 days off shift pattern
Duration (Temp/Perm): Temporary for 3 months with possible extension or change to permanent subject to business needs at the time.
Closing date: Friday 27 January 2012
Key purpose of position
• To prepare water, food and swab samples for analysis.
• To analyse samples for routine microbiological tests or pathogens. • To prepare culture media (agar plates and broths).
Main duties will include but are not restricted to
• Prepare water, food or swab samples for analysis including weighing samples and preparing dilutions.
• Analyse samples for a wide range of routine microbiological parameters and pathogens including, Salmonella, Listeria and Legionella.
• Read plates, calculate results and enter data on ELMS. • Preparation of culture media involving the use of media preparators and autoclaves.
• Other general laboratory duties which may include sample registration.
Skills and competences
• Be able to work as part of a team in a busy department.
• Be able to accurately follow written procedures.
• Previous relevant experience would be an advantage.
