Congratulations to Science Teacher of the Year

02 July 2010

Justin Low, from Skinner Kent Academy in Tunbridge Wells, has scooped the Kent Science Park sponsored Science Teacher of the Year Award and as a special prize the park is funding a Science Masterclass for 20 of his students held at the Kent Science Resource Centre, here at KSP.

The Kent Science Resource Centre is a state of the art facility designed specifically to deliver engaging and inspiring science training – since it’s inception it has played host to a great many schoolchildren taking part in Science Masterclass courses.

The courses give students an interactive and exciting experience of working in high tech laboratory facilities that are rarely available to them at school. Great care is taken to ensure that what they learn while on the course is always directly relevant to their studies and the national curriculum.

Kent Science Park’s Paul Price was one of the judges at the Kent Teacher Awards, organised by the KM group, and said: “We’re delighted for Justin and are looking forward to his visit to the park for his Science Masterclass. Kent Science Park is a centre of excellence for Science and Technology and we are determined to do everything we can to promote and develop science in schools. Sponsoring this award, and offering this prize, is a great way for us to be directly involved in producing tomorrow’s scientists!”

Justin was chosen as the winner of the Science Award because of his ability to motivate his pupils. His encouraging and challenging style of teaching recently saw him inspire a team of budding engineers to victory in the Kent Interschool Challenge. He also actively promotes independent learning through his ‘Science Passport’ scheme as well as running the school’s Duke of Edinburgh program.

Above all though he is an extremely knowledgeable physics teacher with a strong engineering specialism and the ability to turn one of the most abstract and challenging subjects children study into something relatable and involving.

Speaking about his achievement Justin said: “It is a great honour and privilege to receive this award and I would like to thank my colleagues for their nominations. I think that Science education is so important for our country if we are to continue to be a world leader in the field. Young people need to be given the opportunity to become engaged with science and realise what a vast, diverse and exciting subject it is.”

“I can’t wait to bring my students to the science park and give them the opportunity to see 'real' science in action.”
