Welcome to the latest edition in our series of interviews with scientists and business owners based on the Park. The purpose of these profiles is for you to get to know tenants on site, what they do, what they offer, and how it could benefit you and your business.
The next interviewee is Philip North, Managing Director of NorthWise Services, who discussed the sort of work his company undertakes, and the help he can provide for your business.
Philip North trained as a mathematician and statistician. He studied both at the University of Sussex and at the University of Kent. In between his periods of study and research he was a schoolteacher, in both the UK and The Netherlands.
He is a keen and active ornithologist and his PhD research work concerned statistical methods in ornithology. After completing that work he lectured in statistics at the University of Kent for two years before working as Managing Director at a company providing services and training to industry and other organisations. He set up NorthWise Services Ltd in January 2001.
Tell us a bit about NorthWise and what you do:
NorthWise Services (NWS) was established in 2001, and after running it for a year from home I relocated to what would become Kent Science Park. My colleague Jackie came onboard nine months after I set the business up, and has been with me ever since. She has extensive IT skills and experience (she has been building databases throughout her working life, has sold computer software and currently maintains the NWS IT system).
NWS has several areas of expertise, with our main focus currently on staff recruitment and the provision of services in data management, statistics and medical writing. We are also able to design and develop questionnaires to collect information.
Why should other businesses choose you to help their business grow?
Obviously, our experience in staff recruitment in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology sectors highlights a very tangible way in which we can help companies grow. Another is the fact that the fundamental data handling and data analysis skills and experience which NorthWise Services possesses are applicable to any type of company or organisation, in any sector, that is dealing with numerical data and/or verbal information.
Organisations which need to collect and use data often might not know how best to obtain and present information from the data. There might also be the question of how best to display the information visually, with appropriate pictorial summaries and tables. We can advise on all of these aspects and can handle the data as required, in order to be able to present this as useable information. We are also able to interpret the data by carrying out basic or complex analysis.
We can advise on the best use of tools for handling the information collected. This might mean helping to develop the most effective (and hence efficient) use of spreadsheets or the building of a suitable database in which to deposit information. A recent example with a client showed how we can save a client considerable amounts of time, and hence money, simply by showing the client how to use spreadsheets in a different way from what was being done previously, to handle information. So with a small investment by a client in the short term, NWS has the potential to save that client a lot of money in the long term.
