Biological Samples: Disease State Plasma and Residual Clinical Samples

Posted on 19 February 2013

Welcome to the next edition in the series of interviews with scientists and science business owners based on the Park. The purpose of these profiles is for you to get to know tenants on site, what they do, what they offer, and how it could benefit you and your business.

We have leading edge science taking place throughout the Park and more interactivity could benefit you and other businesses.

The next interviewee is Giedre Brandao, Managing Director of AbBaltis, who discussed the sort of work her company undertakes, and the help she can provide for your business.

About Giedre

Giedre Brandao is a Biologist with over ten years experience from companies such as GSK Pharmaceuticals and Genzyme.

Giedre gained her Masters degree from Worcester Polytechnic in the US, and did her Masters thesis research at Genzyme in Framingham, MA. She set up AbBaltis after identifying a gap in the market, and saw this as an opportunity to develop her skills "outside of the lab", whilst remaining entrenched in science.

Giedre is fluent in four languages and can speak and read four others in varying degrees.

Tell us a bit about AbBaltis and what you do:

AbBaltis was set up two years ago to supply raw materials and research material to the In Vitro Diagnostics industry as well as research organisations. We specialise in difficult to find samples, such as Milk IgE, Wheat IgE, Avocado IgE positive serum samples as well as plasma positive for re-emerging diseases including Dengue and Chagas to name just a few. With autoimmune diseases on the rise many of our customers are researching ways to make better diagnostic kits and we provide samples positive for such markers as CCP, RF, antibodies to dsDNA, SSB, SSA, Jo-1, Sm, RNP, Scl70 and more.

We supply to organisations all over the world, with the bulk of our clients being in the US or EU. We have just begun supplying to China, which is another huge potential market. The work we do has a direct impact on patient’s lives, as the materials lead to the production of new kits that improve the diagnosis of certain conditions – without these materials the research would not even start.

Why should other businesses on the Park choose you to help their business grow?

We can supply companies with a huge selection of research samples including Allergy, Autoimmune, Inflammatory, and Infectious Bulk Human Disease State Plasma; as well as Residual Clinical Samples.

We can also undertake contract manufacture of antigens on request. Our main strength is that we strive to create, develop and provide a bespoke solution tailored to your needs.
