The second in our series of interviews with scientists and science business owners based on the Park. These profiles help you to get to know our tenants, what they do, what they offer and how it could benefit you and your business. We have leading edge science taking place throughout the Park and more interactivity could benefit you and other businesses.
This month's interviewee is Norman Maciver, Technician and Tutor at the Kent Science Resource Centre (KSRC). Norman discussed what the KSRC do and how they can be of service to your business.
Norman Maciver BSc PgDip MRSC is one of the newest recruits to the Kent Science Resource Centre. The highly qualified scientist is employed by the centre as a technician/tutor and is involved with the delivery of the BSc (hons) degree in Life Science Laboratory Technology.
Norman studied for a degree in Chemistry and has gained 12 years experience in Analytical Chemistry within the private sector working with companies such as Zeneca, Avecia Biotechnology and Syngenta.
Norman has also spent the last five years employed in Higher and Further Education; first of all at The University of Strathclyde in Pharmaceutical Analysis and then at MidKent College as a Science Technician/Tutor.
The Kent Science Resource Centre delivers a range of life science courses including: microbiology, immunology and chemistry. This is targeted at training science technicians, up skilling current employees and offering school enrichment activities for primary school children through to A-level and beyond. We can plan and deliver bespoke courses according to the needs of an individual alongside training events scheduled throughout the year. We give students first hand experience of diverse scientific processes and industry needs.
The KSRC Analytical Laboratory is equipped with UV/VIS Spectrophotometer, FT-IR, GC Agilent FID detectors and HPLC Agilent with UV and DAD capabilities. The range of equipment on site has enabled us to offer a BSc (Hons) degree in Life Science Laboratory Technology which is an Honours top up to the existing two-year Foundation Degree (FdSc).
There are a wide range of services that we can provide due to the extensive experience throughout the team. Training can be supplied on HPLC and GC instrumentation in MSc Pharmaceutical analysis and Food analysis alongside the calibration and maintenance of HPLC, GC, UV/VIS and FTIR.
I have gained experience in a supervisory role as a Principal Analytical Chemist, which included tasks such as review and clearance of results, laboratory investigations and practical analytical chemistry. Work took place across a number of fields including HPLC, GC, FTIR, ICP, UV/VIS and titrimetry giving me a wide breadth of knowledge to work with a variety of scientists.
We can also provide analytical and development support in terms of antibiotic manufacturing and Pesticide Residue analysis. We have extensive experience including HPLC trouble-shooting and maintenance of equipment.
